Summer Flower Bulbs India – Unlike winters, summer has a limited number of flower bulbs to choose and grow but as the fact “limited” word is magical as we all know, good things are at count in the nature so are these amazing summer bulbs where Rajanigandha can alone stood and win the heart over thousands fragrant flowers, Gladiolus can beat the bests in its beautiful shades and colors. Lets have a look at the common bulbs which can be grown as an outdoor houseplants in summer:
Tuberose – Polianthes Tuberosa (Rajnigandha), the tuberose is a perennial flowering plant (A perennial plant is a plant that lives for more than two years), native to Mexico and categorized under Asparagaceae plants family. Meaning of Rajanigandha is “The Fragrance of the Night”, it has tubular blooms with magical and seductive fragrance which is uncommon and spells magic to all who smell it. Tuberose is a popular flower in floral arrangements and scent is used to produce perfumes world wide.
Gladiolus – Gladiolus is also known as sword lily, gladiola or glads, it is a perennial flowering plant categorized under Iridaceae plants family. Meaning of latin word Gladiolus is “sword”, because its deep green leaves resemble to a sword. Gladiolus has approx 260 species which produces beautiful showy flowers in several shapes, shades and colors.
Zephyranthes Lily – It is one of the easiest care, popular and elegant flowering plant for the summer season. Zephyranthes is also known with several common names like, fairy lily, rain flower, zephyr lily, magic lily, atamasco lily and rain lily etc. Zephyranthes is widely cultivated as ornamental flowering plant, it has more than 70 species categorized under Amaryllidaceae (Amaryllis) plant family.
Football Lily – Scadoxus multiflorus is native to South Africa and its common name football lily is based on its round spiky shape, it also known with many other names like blood lily, blood flower, Katherine wheel, oxtongue lily, poison root and powder puff lily etc. It grows very well in tropics and blooms are big with red/ pink spikes and yellow specks at the ends and lasts for about a week. The leaves are smooth and dark green in color, the plant grows to a height of 12-18 inches.
Curcuma – Curcuma longa or Turmeric is native to India, it has been used in South Asia for thousands of years as a spice and herb, do i really need to tell something more about it here? May be a bit about its beautiful flower which blooms at the end of summer, haldi requires temperature around 30 degree celsius to grow well and bloom.
Chincherinchee or Ornithogalum – Ornithogalum thyrsoides is native to South Africa and categorized under Asparagaceae plants family. It is also known by several common names like chinkerinchee or chincherinchee, star-of-Bethlehem or wonder-flower etc. It is a perennial flower and contains about 120 species which are cultivated in Africa, Europe and Western Asia. Plants is approx 20 to 50 cm tall, with round bulbs and leaves range from 15 to 30 cm in length and 0.5 to 1.5 cm in width. Ornithogalum white or creamy-white flowers are very long lasting.
Kaempferia – There is no need to tell more about it than, its English name is Ginger and Hindi is Adrak.
