Alocasia Amazonica Introduction
A genus of broad-leaved perennials, Alocasia is native to the subtropical and tropic Eastern Australia to Asia, although they are cultivated worldwide. It is also known as the Kris plant or Elephant Ear plant. The trademark broad leaves of the plant genus makes for beautiful plants to be kept inside the house. The Alocasia plants are easy to grow, staying a bloom for nearly half of the year. The plants are herbaceous perennial, implying that their stems are not of wood and they bloom twice a year.
The flowers on the plant are rare. Spotting flowers on the Alocasia is a once-in-a-while event on a well looked after plant. Therefore, the prime attraction of the plant is its beautiful foliage, which makes it an excellent ornamental plant. The common Elephant Ear Plant grows beautiful leaves that makes it great for plant lovers which are newbies in the gardening skills. With a little bit of effort, these plants can adorn any household well.
The height and spread of the Alocasia can vary from 2 to 6 feet. Locations that are protected from strong winds after the frost date are preferable for the plant. Direct sunlight as well as entirely dark areas are not suited to the plant. It must be kept in areas where the lighting is mediocre – neither too bright, nor too gloomy. The soil used for the Alocasia must be a fast draining peat based mix. These plants have an affinity for water. A diluted balanced fertilizer is ideal for feeding once every two weeks from the spring till the end of August.
